Salares is located 58 miles from Malaga at an altitude of 540 metres and is found on the Mudejar Architectural Route. The church, Santa Ana, is built in the Mudejar style with its own minaret in near perfect condition. The population is approximately 400 and is a peaceful as well as a typical village of the Axarquía region. It is in the skirt of the Natural Park Sierra Tejeda-Almijara, an important nature reserve where animals like wild goat, fox, eagle, vultures and wild boar inhabit.
The town is a labyrinth of narrow and staggered streets that transports us to the past. Salares was chosen for its beauty and tranquillity for exterior shots for an English film production, The Teacher, in September of 1998.
From Salares you can easily visit many of the picturesque surrounding villages and can also make day-trips to places like Granada , where the world renowned Alhambra Palace is located. The coastal town of Torre del Mar is only 37 kilometres away where you can enjoy typical fried fish dishes at one of the many bars along the beach front.
