Archez lies 51 kilometres east of Málaga at an altitude of 435 metres and 25 kilometres from the coastal town of Torre del Mar. The village is located in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Mudejar Route, and has a population of approximately 400.
Archez is a small, peaceful village in a valley setting with the river Turvilla running through it. On the banks of the river can be found the ruins of old flour mills, an indication of Archez’s previous industry now replaced with agriculture including avocados, olives and vines.
Adjoined to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacíon is a 16th century Mudéjar tower whose minaret dates from the 13th century and is preserved in perfect condition.
Local facilities include shops, bars, restaurants, bank, pharmacy etc. The neighbouring village of Canillas de Albaida is only 1½ kilometers and Cómpeta is only a short distance by car.
